This workshop can welcome both film and digital photographers while keeping the teaching centered on skills that apply to either format.

- Open shade versus direct sunlight
- How to choose a portrait background
- Lens choice and shooting distance
- How aperture affects the portrait
- How to expose for skin tones
- Basic portrait composition
- Headshots, half-body, and environmental portraits
- How to direct someone who is not a professional model
- Simple posing for individuals and couples
- How to position hands, shoulders, and faces
- How to use a reflector
- How to communicate confidently while shooting
- How to select the strongest images from a session
Workshop flow
First 30 minutes: Light, composition, and camera settings
Next 30 minutes: Posing and directing a subject
Next 90 minutes: Rotating through two or three shooting setups
Final 30 minutes: Image review, critique, and questions

- One professional or experienced model
- Two to three portrait setups
- Natural-light demonstrations
- Reflectors and basic lighting equipment
- Portrait posing guide
- Group image critique
Student should bring
- Film or digital camera
- A lens between approximately 35mm and 85mm
- Charged batteries
- Memory card or film
- Light meter when their film camera does not have one
